Tinariwen (Mali / Sahara)

What for long was meant to be has finally become real: the most genial band of the desert arrives in the mint-scented festival. Formed in 1979, Tinariwen has a long history of resistance, cultural, but also of literal warfare, for the sake of the Touareg people living in the northern part of Mali. Today in peace, they are one of the few Non-Western bands that, keeping their wholesome integrity, are able to compete with the rock giants at their own game, what has been proved once again very recently when they beat Bob Dylan, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective, coming first to get the Uncut award for Best Record of 2009, “Imidiwan”. The incredible interplay of their acoustic and electric guitars, the hypnotic voices and traditional percussions, rooted in Western Africa and Maghreb, combine to produce a sound whose familiarity with blues and rock doesn’t ignore Western influences but is mainly a case of parallel evolution. Ibrahim Ag Alhabib, lead vocals and lead guitar, points the way. Sines’ sky and the Saharan sky share their stars for a night.
